November 11 St. Thomas

November 11

We woke up this morning in St. Thomas, one of 32 islands in the Virgin Islands, 17 of which belong to the U.S. and the remainder to Great Britain.  While it was a bit overcast, we ventured out for a panoramic drive around the island, making a number of photographic stops.

We thought this tree very unusual, with the branches and the needles all pointing upwards.  The tree itself was about 15' tall.

This view of  the turquoise waters of Magens Bay on the Atlantic was perfect.  Do you see the iguana in the trees, marked by an arrow?

We didn't know that iguanas climbed trees.  They seem to be on the ground in Mexico.  Our guide told us that they are out only in the morning to feed, and then they hide in the shade for the rest of the day.  He says they are not eaten on St. Thomas, although they are on some other islands.

He also said that the people of the Virgin Islands are U.S. citizens, except they can't vote.  They do pay U.S. federal income taxes.  I think it was fortunate Obama was born in Hawaii and not the Virgin Islands!

When we returned, we took  a walkabout on the 13 floors of our ship to see what is here.  This Royal Caribbean  ship is the most beautiful of any we have ever been on, Carnival and NCL.  it is all dark woods and brass, ultra-elegant.  We have now eaten a breakfast, lunch, and dinner onboard and the food far excels all but perhaps our first cruise.  We sort of liked the more casual atmosphere of Carnival, with all the families and kids, but not everyone does.  This is really special.

There is a huge climbing rock on one of the top decks, three swimming pools, many restaurants, etc.  it probably took an hour just to check out the ship.

It was a relaxing day, and one we really needed after yesterday.
